Vietnam - EU free trade

One step forward
The European Union announced today that it will start talks with Vietnam on a free-trade agreement.
Trade in goods between the two countries was almost €12 billion ($16.27 billion) in 2008 and has increased 12% a year between 2004 and 2008.
EU governments had already agreed to pursue free-trade deals with ASEAN, a group of countries which includes Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar and the Philippines.
But EU governments had raised concerns about negotiating with all the governments at once. The commission is now pursuing agreements with each country.
